4th Letter..

Date: July 28, 2011  Area: Provo MTC    Companion: Elder Eves
 Hello Familia!

How are you all doing? Keeping cool in San Diego? The weather here has been kind of strange. Usually it’s boiling hot but the last few days we have had some really cool thunder storms in the afternoon! Yesterday it was like pouring and then an hour later it was sunny again! I kind of like it.

But I guess I'll start with answering letters again cause that saved my hand last week!

Mom- I don't know about the flight receipt. The first day was too crazy and I didn't get a chance to check on it and forgot after that. I haven't heard of anyone here getting reimbursed like that but I'll check around and see. I loved the story of the Perry's! They are so awesome and she writes such wonderful music! That will be awesome to be able to go see them at the Conference that’s coming up! It should be fun with Cutler and you'll have fun with the Vances, they're great. Can you send me the sheet music and lyrics to "Here am I" please? I'm thinking about singing it in church. I thought I had told you, so sorry, but yes, I did get the 4th of July package! Thank you! And thank you for the package with my slippers! I am now stocked on goodies and the fudge was awesome! One girl (the Brazilian) says it’s the best fudge she's ever had=) I do not have any gloves and I don't know if I'm going to want to get them here, I'm thinking I might just get some down there. If I do get them here I don't want anything that is too big, I have lots of stuff already and we are getting a completely new set of books on Monday because the MTC is starting a new teaching program so I'm just worried on space. As far as pictures I think the best way to do them would be to mail a SD card back and forth. I can't get them uploaded here in the MTC so I got some printed a couple days ago but they haven't come in yet so I'll mail those off as soon as I can.

Lindy- I play soccer out on the big field by the temple, it’s usually super-hot! I'm excited to get to Chile but I try not to think about it too much because then time seems to slow down. Just a month from tomorrow! It will come fast! There are a group of Chileans on my floor now and they are actually pretty tough to understand. They don't talk all that loud and they drop off half of their words. It'll be fun! It sounded like you have had some fun with your research project. It actually sounds really interesting, the effects of knowing the student's first language when teaching. But I'm glad I don't have any of those to do =P As far as adopting your Spanish to how the people around here speak you don't need to change because they are from all over and you're really a Spaniard at heart. Preach My Gospel is great. You should get a copy and read it. Its got some wonderful principles in there. I've been to the TRC a few times but we haven't ever recorded ourselves. Our teacher (hna pete) brought her husband and some friends to be volunteers for us the other day because we hadn't had any investigators before that. You have a test for 10 days??! That’s nuts! I'm so glad that I don't have to do that! The 24th of July was dumb! The mail room wasn't open! I'm guessing you sent the cookies on Friday? Well I wasn't given the slip for my package until after the mailroom was closed so I couldn't pick it up then and the mailroom was closed on Saturday, Sunday and Monday so I couldn't pick up the package until Tuesday! But the cookies were still delicious and those are just what I wanted =) everyone in my district absolutely loved them and says thank you so much! You are the best! I do have access to a microwave in the bottom of my residence hall.... why? What could you be sendign that needs a microwave... Church here is broken up, we have sacrament in the morning and then we have priesthood a couple hours later in the day. We have no FHE. Of all the missionaries that went to Santiago north a couple weeks ago I know 2 of the hermanas and 1 of the elders, they are all really great. I don't get the ensign. Could you find the talk online and dear elder it to me? Those cupcakes sound like they were good, but somehow I'm not surprised that you were able to eat so many.... me disfruti la carta que me envio el otro dia. Puede escribir me en espanol cuando lo quiere =) Y no te preoccupas de todos los accentos, no me gusta entrar los tam poco!
Now for my week. It was a really, really good week. I was made district leader which is really interesting cause there is a girl in my district(the new one) that is having some issues and she might get sent home. She is on probation in a way we we'll see what happens. Before I was called as district leader I really loved and cared about all the people in my district but now that I'm district leader I feel responsible for all of them. But my district is awesome and I love them so it’s all good.

This last week I guess you could call a week of change for me. At least I’ve been trying to change. I read a talk by a member of the 70, I don't remember his name (I’ll tell you next week) but it was called the 4th missionary. And he talks about what you need to do to become a good missionary. Elder Bednar would say to "be a missionary, not just go on a mission". He says that it is important to forget about the things that you want and to completely surrender yourself to the lord and to align your will with his so that you only want to do things that he would have you do or that he would want to do. It was an incredible powerful talk and I am trying to apply the principles in my life.

We listened to a talk by Elder Holland the other night and he kind of hit on the same thing. He talked about Moses 1:39 and how we need to make this work OUR work and OUR glory. That we should feel so personally about it that we feel possession over it in that way. That we feel that it is our own. Mine. So I have been trying to see things in that new light and it really changes how you view things. Many things don't matter as much or you don't think about them the same but I've felt more love for those around me which is cool.

Elder Simmons of the 70 spoke to us on Tuesday night which was cool (we were in the 3rd row!) and he talked about prayer and one thing he said that stuck out to me and I liked was that we should pray daily and ask for greater understanding about who we are. I thought it was interesting because we all change so much all the time but often times, at least for me, I don't realize how I'm changing. So to pray for that and then to be aware of the ways that I'm changing make me conscious of the person I'm becoming and once I know that I can decide if I like that person and change accordingly. I thought he was very insightful.

Today was the first day that my district went to the temple since we have been here. It has been closed for cleaning ever since I arrived. But it was great, I always love going to the temple. I always feel so peaceful and happy in there. I noticed that today, I couldn't stop smiling=) But the temple is definitely a wonderful place and we are so lucky to have so many so close and that we have the opportunity to visit them.

Mom and Dad, thank you for always being such great examples of patience, love and service to everyone around you. You really are amazing people and raised Lindy, Spencer, Cutler and I by example. There is no way that I would be here now if it weren't for your examples. So thank you and I love you.

Lindy, Spencer and Cutler, thank you for being so supportive of me, you 3 are all wonderful examples to me of what I need to work harder to become in so many different ways. I love you!

Love,
Elder Holland
