Miracles

Date: August 10, 2012
Area: Santiago, Chile
Companion: Elder Barnes

Hola Familia,

The trip to Nor Cal sounds like it was short but good! I am excited for Lindy and Camille to live together, it should be good for the both of them. Cutler looked pretty good in the drivers seat of the BMW but im pretty sure that the picture was a fake. I think you just sat in the front seat while the car was parked and posed for the camera =)
Thanks to Grandma and Pa Anderson, Grandma Ruth and Aunt Helen and Uncle Ken for your financial contributions to my mission. I really appreciate it!
Spencer sounded like he had a blast on his trip out to Idaho and definitely made me jealous with the camping and wake boarding and jet skiing and everything that you did! I miss stuff like that so much! But one day it will come and that day is sooner rather than later, thats for sure.

Mom, the package you sent me came! Thanks so much! It was awesome! Some great tastes from home, this week we are going to be in great shape (or maybe not so much so=) but thank you so much!

But as for me and my week it was great, filled with ups and downs. But I guess I´ll start from the beginning and the first few days of the week were killer. It was like nothing happened! I felt a bit frustrated and things just didn´t seem like they were going our way, it was a bit rough. Those days were long, haha. But Thursday we woke up and we decided, ¨Today is going to be different. We are going to be better and work harder and things are all going to turn out¨ and we prayed for some extra help from the Lord. He came through! It wasn´t a perfect day but it was a good day. We found the daughter of a member who isn´t a member. The daughter is like 40 and has schkitsopfrenia (I have NO clue how to spell that=) But she is pretty good with her medication. She didn´t come to church this week but she is good and we will just have to keep working with her to help her to come.

But Friday went by extrememly fast because we did intercambios and Elder Barnes went to another sector for the day and I was here in Cerro Colorado. The day went by way too fast. Time is flying. But the highlight of the day was that we were ending the day and we went to our last appointment, BLanca and Ruben, and the electricity had been cut for like their whole area. So we went in and were talking inside with a lantern. We were talking to their niece, Michelle, who I will talk about in a little bit. But while we were there the lights came back on but there was a power surge and it basically burned ALLL the cables in the entire house! Luckly they had a plastic tubing covering all the cables and that protected the house from being burned down! It was actually kind of crazy. But they were so greatful to our heavenly father afterwards for having saved their house from being burned down, they are so humble and so great. They are my favorite investigators. They really personify the scripture that tells us to become like a little child, to be humble, patient, willing to bear all things that the Father sees fit to put upon you. They take everything as a sign and a learning experience and are the best examples. So they were very blessed that night. They are basically members but the only thing that keeps them from not being able to be baptized is the Law of Chastity. Blanca is married to another man and will have to be divorced, wait a year and then be able to be marrried to Ruben and be baptized.

But speaking of the Law of Chastity. I am so greatful for that commandment. It is so true, that if we keep the commandments we are protected and blessed. Michelle, the niece, is 15 years old and has had a really hard life. Her Dad, Blanca´s brother rejected her, and her mom threw her out of the house a while back and she was basically living on the street. She got pregnant and at that time she could hardly find food to feed herself and so she decided to abort. It is really sad. But now, Blanca has taken her in and she is now living with her. She is still 15 and she thinks that she is pregnant again. I feel terrible for her, she just doesn´t understand what she is doing! It makes me want to... well I don´t know exactly what it makes me want to do but I just feel bad and frustrated for her! When we keep the commandments we are really blessed and we are protected by the lord.

But Saturday we were back to normal, yo with Elder Barnes and it was a great day. Things flew by again but again, the highlight was at the end of the day when we went by to visit with Blanca and Ruben again. This time they were still fixing the house and repariing it and everything but they were alone (michelle wasnt´there). We had originally planned on doing the restoration with Michelle because she doesn´t really kinow the chruch but because she wasnt there I felt that we should talk about chastity with them so that the would know more clearly what the chruches stand is on chastity. So I pulled out the chastity pamphlet and they cut us off. They (long story short) said that they, for the past two weeks had been talkiing abotut living the law of Chastity. That Blanca wanted to do it but Ruben didn´t. Well Ruben is taking some prescription drugs that apparently have had some side effects the last few days and it has been somewhat of a sign to him that he should live the Law of Chastity. Basically he said a prayer and asked if what was happening was a sign from God that he should live the commandment and he felt a warm feeling come over him. That happened Saturday morning. And I pulled out the pamphlet saturday night with them. I have no doubt that we were directed by the spirit in that and I know that the Lord has been preparing them so much so that they can enter into the covenant of baptism. They want to do what is right so much and have decided to live separately and wait until they are married before they do anything together again. And now they are going to be BAPTIZED! In two weeks! They are so excited and I am too. It is such a great blessing from the Lord for Elder Barnes and I but more importantly for them. It truly was a miracle.

I know that the Lord´s hand is in this work and that he leads and directs it. And I am lucky enough, and blessed enough, to be a part of this work.

I love you all so much, until next week.

Elder Jaromy Holland
