Still Here

Date: February 28, 2012
Area: Santiago, Chile
Companion: Elder Lopez

Hey Family,

This week was really kind of slow and not too much happened. Well, I guess a few things have happened haha. The weather changed haha. Its not blistering hot with the sun quemandonos (burning us) anymore. its like San Diego weather not, not too hot, not too cold, but just right. So i´m in heaven now. But the people are finally coming back from vacations because school starts soon which I´m really happy about because we are going to have people to teach again! But we had a pretty big let-down this week. I mentioned a Carlos Toro from a while back and he was going to get baptized this last Sunday. He is really poor and lives alone and doesn´t have many friends and its really sad but he gets a little money from the government each month. He got the money the same day that we had the baptismal interview and when we went to his house (well I wasn´t there because I was in intercambios (changes) with the zone leader who had to do the interview) but he was completely wasted cause he wasted his money on booze. So we are working with him and trying to get things figured out and hopefully he will be able to get baptized this next week.

Things are tougher this change than they have been in the past but its ok, its all part of the experience as Kathy would say. Thanks Mom for all your words of advice and comfort. I don´t know how you do it (well yeah I do, the spirit=) but you always seem to say exactly what I need to hear every week so thank you! I printed off your letter with the stories from the japanese mission presidents and from melvin j ballard. They were awesome! I especially liked the thoughts about loving everyone, showing them that you love them and that you care. That was a great reminder for me of something that I can work on and get better at. Its sometimes really hard to love the people in the streets that you don´t even know but its what Christ did and he loves me and you so I can try to work a little harder to love everyone else in the same way. Thanks mom.

But the week was really pretty unexciting. Hna Gomez got back yesterday and I was really excited to be able to see the family again! I´m going to miss them when I leave. And President Essig sent me a letter and told me that he would be changing me the next change so I will definitely be going someplace new. We´ll see where. It is going to be weird. In the intercambios last week I went to another area to work for the day and it was the first time that I had left Corona Sueca to work in another area in like 3 months!!! =)

But thank you all for the Emails that you sent. And Lindy and Spencer.... WAHOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU¨RE GOING TO ZAMBIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I¨m so stoked for you guys! That will be BAKAN!! like they say here in Chile. Spencer, i¨m so glad that you decided to go. This, if you let it, will seriously change your life. I´m going to send you guys a voice recording next week but know that I´m so happy for the both of you, its amazing the experience. Thanks mom and Dad for sending them! ANd Cutler, mom told me that you are going to be going the next summer! When i get back... go for it man! Its way worth it and even if you are going to be there when I get back from Chile- do it. Its worth it. go for it.

As for a couple of Dad´s questions. The weather here is finally changing but it is definitely much hotter here than SD is in the summer. Its not that its necessarily so hot but that the sun really burns you because the ozone layer is like nonexistant here in chile. I don´t really like the city, I prefer the suburbs and nature, mountains, ocean, things like that. Even though I guess you could say that i´m in the suburbs but its not very pretty haha.I prefer san diego =) =) The spanish is coming along, I dream in spanish all the time. I found out since I came here that I talk in my sleep....alot. Like every night and its more like a conversation than just talking. I am hoping that my companion can record me one of these nights cause it happens almost every night. But I don´t have to think about the spanish so much anymore. Like you said, I just need to work on building my vocab now and thats a pain =) haha.

Lindy, We didn´t find anyone new to teach this week which stinks but i´m hoping that this next week willbe better. Today we were going to do something with Christopher but he can´t so I think that we are going to do something next week like make rootbeer from the extract mom gave me for christmas and cookies and hamburgers or something. Its his birthday on sunday so I want to do something for him. Wish him a happy birthday on sunday. Mom, Christopher was asking about timeshares and I don´t really know that much about him but maybe you could send him a quick email and tell him if theyare worth it or not and how to do them..

SOrry its a lame email this week but I hope you all have a great week.

Les quiero,

ELder Holland
