Date: October 12, 2011 Area: Santiago, Chile Companion:Elder
Metcalf
Hola familia,
So Transfers!!
Nothing happened. I´m still here in the same area with Elder Metcalf. I was
really expecting him to get changed because he has been here for about 6 months
now! But I guess there is still more that I need to learn from him so he’s
still here.
Mom, I am alive
and well! Dad, there was an earthquake down here? 8.5????!!! That’s huge!
Where? I didn´t feel it and I haven´t heard anything about it!
First, answers
to Lindy´s questions. I did watch all 5 sessions of conference, they went by
super quickly! Too fast. They were in English with all the other English
speaking elders. I loved so many of the talks, I can´t wait for the next
edition of the liahona so I can re'read them. I loved president Monson´s talk Sunday
with the money in his pocket and prayer. And I loved president Uchtdorf´s
Saturday morning address. They focused alot on prayer this general conference,
I guess it’s one of the basic, most foundation principles of the church. It
must be important! They don´t really have too many desserts here. They do like
fruit, peaches mainly, sometimes ice cream but that about it. They sell like
dulces (treat sort of things) with manjar. It’s like a caramel thing that’s
SUPER good! It’s an addiction for sure. Companion is good, I´m learning a lot
and I have found that patience is key and I can always work on that=) The Spanish
is going well, I can do the gospel talk but I want to be able to talk about
everything else too so I´m going to start studying =) I don´t really like how
the Chilean´s speak so I am going to have to find some other type of accent to
try to work on and imitate. The roads are all paved here, it’s pretty modern.
The cars, where i am at least, are all older models of the cars but I have seen
some really nice ones downtown. They are fairly wealthy in Santiago. We ride
the buses all the time, they are called micros here. We take them to the zone
conferences every week and to go shopping. But normally we are just walking.
Last night we were walking, elder Metcalf was in front of me on the sidewalk,
and a dog like slammed into the gate of the house and tried to eat him! He
jumped about 3 feet and screamed, it was pretty funny. I want to go to the
cerro San Cristobal someday but normally we just relax on p-day which I am
completely fine with! I don´t really know much of what there is in Santiago so
I don´t really know what would be cool to see.
This week we
did intercambios, exchanges, and I was with an elder Clark from Alaska. He is
way cool and really, pretty similar to me. I know, Im way cool too. but hes
from a sector called Curacavi and it is out in the campo, more rural. So he
came to my sector but we went out there to pick up my companion the next day
and so I got to see it and its super pretty! Spencer, you would have loved it!
I want to go to the campo! but well see, for now I’ll enjoy Corona sueca.
Jose, the
investigator is doing really well. He accepted the baptismal date and he came
to church this last Sunday. He has a ton of questions but he is willing and
trying to apply the gospel to his life and to change. He is super. We went to
visit last night and he is going to progress extremely well. It is somewhat
hard to teach him though because he lives alone and is really lonely so he
likes to talk a lot about everything because he enjoys our company but it’s
good to get to know him a bit better.
I got a package
this week from the Whitaker family!!! I wasn`t expecting it so I was so excited
when I got it!!!! All the candy is already gone but my companion and I enjoyed
it. The blanket, i use every day during studies- its a little warmer here now
but I like the blanket, its super comfortable. And all the tools are awesome! I
carry the leatherman with me all the time, and i`m guessing I’ll get some good
use out of the flashlight because there are power outages fairly often here.
Thank you so much! And I’m so glad your family is doing well!
Kelsey, Tori,
Molly and Chi. I got your letters! Thank you! I loved them and am working on
writing back, but we have to go downtown to send letters so...I’m working on
them. Don`t worry, you`ll get a response.
Here in Corona
Sueca, the ward is awesome. They are all changing. They have changed alot since
I arrived. They are all working on being missionaries and we just called like 7
ward missionaries that are going to start helping us out. The ward mission
leader is the bomb. He served in LA so he knows English and he loves to talk to
us in English. He got home last December, was married in February...crazy. But
he is super excited about the mission work and is helping us out a ton. The
missionary work has changed so much just since I arrived in the ward, Super
exciting!
Ok, out of
time. I love you all so much! I love hearing from you, your stories and
experiences. Keep moving forward; rely on the Lord and each other. I love you!
Elder Holland
